  • Why your next smart bulb might have Bluetooth inside

    Bluetooth might not be the first wireless technology that springs to mind when it comes to taking charge of your smart bulbs, but that might be about to change. While the Zigbee wireless standard has traditionally ruled the roost when it comes to wireless smart bulb protocols, Bluetooth appears to be gaining momentum. An analyst report recently highlighted by the Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) projects that shipments of Bluetooth-equipped residential lighting products are primed to quadruple in the next five years. Then there was last month’s announcement that Signify’s Philips Hue smart bulbs are changing over to a new chip that features both Bluetooth and Zigbee radios, a development with potentially game-changing consequences in the smart lighting market because it eliminates the need for a central hub. The pairing of Zigbee and Bluetooth in new Philips Hue smart bulbs could be a sign of a complementary rather than competitive future for these wireless protocols, and that’s great news for shoppers. Zigbee vs. Bluetooth? Not necessarily Until now, consumers faced a tricky choice when picking a smart bulb: powerful features with a pricier outlay, or an easier, cheaper setup with stripped-down options. Take Zigbee, a smart-home protocol that offers a wide degree of control over your smart lights, allowing you to put them on a schedule, switch them on and off when you’re out of the house, and even connect them to other smart devices. The downside: the Zigbee protocol requires a bridge device to connect your bulbs to your Wi-FI network, and a Zigbee bridge will set you back $50 or more. Bluetooth, meanwhile, makes for an enticing choice when it comes to smart bulbs, mainly because Bluetooth-enabled smart bulbs don’t need a bridge, and they don’t demand much in the way of setup. Just fire up a smartphone app and you’re ready to flick the switches on your new smart bulbs. On the other hand, you need to be in the same room (generally speaking) to control a smart bulb via Bluetooth, and you’ll forgo the ability to connect them to sensors or other similar smart devices. (Smart bulbs that connect directly to your Wi-Fi network are also a thing, although LIFX and TP-Link are the only big-name companies making them, and neither can match the breadth and depth of the Philips Hue ecosystem.) So, which protocol to choose? Until recently, smart bulb shoppers had to skip some big-name brands that didn’t support their protocol of choice. Those who wanted a quick and cheap smart bulb setup couldn’t go with Zigbee-compliant Philips Hue bulbs, for example, while shoppers who wanted to connect their bulbs to other smart devices couldn’t go the C by GE way—at least not without buying C by GE Smart Bridge. The best of both worlds But the announcement of new Philips Hue bulbs with chips that boast both Zigbee and Bluetooth radios could mark the beginning of a welcome sea change. Because they support both Zigbee and Bluetooth, the latest generation of Philips Hue bulbs essentially give you the best of both worlds: a cheap and easy Bluetooth setup for those who’d rather not cough up extra cash, as well as more involved and connected configurations for smart home users with Zigbee-compliant wireless bridges at their disposal. My guess is that more and more smart bulb manufacturers will follow in the footsteps of Signify and its Philips Hue smart bulbs by making products that support both Bluetooth and Zigbee technology, particularly if dual-radio Zigbee/Bluetooth chips become the norm.

  • Aqara to Announce Zigbee 3.0 Devices at CBD Trade Fair

    Aqara, one of the many companies under the Xiaomi umbrella, responsible for many of the recent low price HomeKit compatible devices available from China, have made a semi-cryptic announcement on the subject of Zigbee 3.0 today via social media. All will seemingly be revealed at the CBD Trade Fair in Guangzhou, China, which takes place from 8th – 11th July 2019. What we do know is that the very recent update to their Aqara HomeKit hub (1.6.2) has something to do with bringing this hub up to speed for Zigbee 3.0 devices, many of which we first revealed in previous posts. This would include the new versions of their current sensor lineup, all with the T1 suffix; Water Leak Sensor, Temperature & Humidity Sensor, Motion Sensor, and the Door & Window Sensor. This would almost certainly also include their new Light detection sensor. Whilst these new sensors would be welcome, the one device that many have been waiting for since we first revealed it back at the start of May, is the new Aqara M2 HomeKit Gateway. From what we understand of this gateway so far, is that not only will it be HomeKit compatible, but it will most likely be powered either by a standard micro USB or USB-C cable, or a c7/c8 type power cable or connector, as opposed to the current hub having its power supply built into the hub. The hub will use Zigbee 3.o as well as Wifi and Bluetooth. Hopefully, this is the trade show where the new hub will be revealed, as so far, stock of the US version of the current hub doesn’t seem to be getting replenished any time soon, along with the EU hub having its own release date pushed further and further back.

  • Bluetooth’s New Location Vocation

    The Global Positioning System (GPS) has been a boon for transportation, but it only works if the receivers can communicate with multiple GPS satellites. Though that’s not too difficult outdoors, it’s typically impossible or inaccurate indoors. Other solutions are normally needed to provide location services indoors. Proprietary solutions have been available and standard platforms like Bluetooth deliver basic location support. Bluetooth stands out because of its ubiquitous nature. The challenge has been implementation of location services in a standard fashion. To date, Bluetooth has supplied useful but low-accuracy positioning information (Fig. 1). The Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) standard allowed two Bluetooth devices to get the approximate distance between the two devices utilizing received signal-strength measurements. This provides good proximity information and is effective when detailed position information isn’t required. 1. Bluetooth has supported proximity and positioning systems that provide basic distance and positioning via triangulation. For example, a beacon that’s providing advertising only needs to know if a device is within a specified range to deliver useful information. This point-of-interest approach has many applications, such as conveying multimedia feedback in a museum about a particular exhibit. Applications like asset tracking in a warehouse requires more complex location support since relative position is also needed. Likewise, more accurate range results can be useful. Bluetooth supports real-time locating systems (RTLS) as well as indoor positioning systems (IPS). This requires multiple Bluetooth sensing systems to determine the position of a device using trilateration (Fig. 2). As of now, the accuracy of this system is rather course, ranging from one to ten meters of accuracy. It’s usually sufficient for systems like robots that need to navigate with a building or warehouse. 2. Multiple devices are used to implement a Bluetooth indoor positioning system (IPS). The latest Bluetooth standard (5.1) allows systems to employ antenna arrays to determine the direction of communication (Fig. 3). A single device with such an array can be used with any other Bluetooth device to determine the relative direction to each other. This is done by measuring the angle of arrival (AoA) or angle of departure (AoD) depending on the direction of communication and which device has the antenna array. 3. Bluetooth 5.1 can determine the angle of transmission to provide relative positioning from a pair of devices. A device without an array can obtain the information from the other device. Orientation of each device is also possible when both devices have the more advanced antenna support. New Bluetooth profiles are being developed to include this location feature, which can provide positioning down to the centimeter level. The standard is just out the door, but we can expect to see it in devices like smartphones that will be able to determine the location of existing Bluetooth devices more accurately. Likewise, Bluetooth devices specifically geared for location support will be common in buildings and on robots and drones. Bluetooth 5.1 stacks with matching antenna support will be available from most Bluetooth hardware vendors. As a result, incorporating this feature in a system should be no more difficult than including earlier Bluetooth support.

  • Tuya delivers insights into what the future portends at the World Internet Conference

    Tuya Smart was the sole IoT solutions provider and smart platform creator invited by the organizer of the World Internet Conference (WIC) and China Central Television (CCTV) to provide insights into the two topics that were the themes of the event: artificial intelligence (AI) and globalized intelligent manufacturing. On December 4, Tuya Smart COO and Tuya Smart USA president Yang Yi, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Tencent CEO Ma Huateng, Netease.com CEO Ding Lei, Sohu CEO Charles Zhang and Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun, among other top-level executives from some of the world’s leading internet firms, attended the event. Global smart platform Tuya Smart, recognized for its outstanding contribution to the intelligent manufacturing and AI sectors, was invited to give a speech themed “New Intelligent Businesses in the New Era” at the AI-focused session. AI is undoubtedly one of the new drivers behind the development of the manufacturing sector. Some medium-sized companies that Tuya Smart worked with experienced sales growth exceeding 50 percent. Consequently, it has become apparent that AI has become the key to the transformation of traditional manufacturing. At the same time, in terms of the country’s transition to intelligent manufacturing, what started out as a rocky road has, over the last two years, gradually become much more smooth going. When the first steps of the transformation were initiated, leading manufacturers from every sector were eager to invest in intelligent manufacturing, however, consumers were still highly skeptical of the new intelligent products and expressed reluctance in getting on board. In addition, the challenges facing adoption included disunity in terms of setting standards, immaturity of the industry chain, instability of the overall system and a high threshold for entry. The reasons behind the challenges, I think, include, first of all, the technology barrier and a lack of cooperation among manufacturers, which resulted in the consumers quickly becoming frustrated when faced with the difficulty of managing the various interfaces and control devices in anything that resembled a unified way. Secondly, an industry is not likely to move up to the next level if it grows independently of the support that it needs from external resources. The establishment of an ecosystem is necessary in providing consumers with a better smart home experience, regardless of whether the provider is a major player or a small start up. This can be seen, for example, in Xiaomi’s stores, each one of which it manages directly, demonstrating the ecosystem’s capability in injecting new momentum into the industry. In my opinion, every player across each industry needs to agree on and roll out fully integrated communications protocols. In addition to enhancements to product safety, cloud computing and big data will help companies build their own ecosystems and provide consumers with new experiences in every corner of their intelligent home. Concurrent with China’s transition into intelligent manufacturing, AI technology has been staking out its own sizeable claim over the last few years. For example, even as Amazon Echo and Google Home have attracted wide attention, more than one million units of Tmall Genie, an AI-based intelligent voice terminal developed by Alibaba AI Labs, have been shipped. According to data from the AI industry whitepaper published by International Data Corporation (IDC), a leading global provider of market intelligence, expenditures on AI technology worldwide are expected to reach 275.8 billion yuan (approx. US$41.7 billion) by 2020, with China representing 12 percent or 32.5 billion yuan (approx. US$4.9 billion) of the total, demonstrating China’s leadership position. We can see huge potential in the field as the Chinese government continues to support AI projects initiated by the country’s three internet leaders, Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent. In addition to the smart home, finance, translation and speech, AI technology will be applied in the healthcare, security, logistics and mobility markets. However, limitations remain in terms of what the algorithm technology can deliver and we need to address them, including further developing the algorithms’ inferential capability in accurately deducing the meaning of speech and in addressing the pathology underlying cancer and other diseases. As we look further into the future, it will behoove us to face and resolve legal and ethical issues that will arise as a result of the widespread adoption of the technology.
